Code of Ethics | Board Commitment
As a Member of the Board of Directors of the DIRECT Center for Independence, Inc. I recognize the importance of adhering to an established code of conduct and code of ethics which values people with disabilities and guides the ethical and proper behavior of the Board of Directors.
As a Member of the Board of Directors I will uphold the following principles:
~ My primary obligation is to DIRECT Center for Independence, Inc. and the people DIRECT serves.
~ I will actively promote the Independent Living philosophy; that each individual is unique; people with disabilities are the most knowledgeable experts about our own needs and issues; consumer control; increased choices; promoting a non-medical model of advocacy and service delivery; self-advocacy, and self-determination.
~ I will strive to eliminate attitudinal barriers, including stereotyping and discrimination toward persons with disabilities and to increase my own awareness and sensitivities to people and issues.
~ I will prioritize the goals of DIRECT, review financial assets/limitations, and promote goodwill in the community.
~ I will obey the laws and statutes of this jurisdiction as they related to the operations of the not-for-profit corporation.
~ I will act on behalf of, and represent DIRECT in a positive manner, and refrain from making disparaging comments about DIRECT, staff, or people with disabilities.
~ I will not use my position as a Director to exploit individuals employed by or served by DIRECT.
~ I will not condone or engage in discrimination based on age, color, culture, disability, ethnic group, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, marital status, or socioeconomic status.
~ I will adhere to the corporation's policies and procedures when initiating an action, or responding to a particular action.
