About Peer Counseling
What is Peer Counseling?
The Independent Living Peer Counselor is a person with a disability who is available to you for counseling and guidance and peer support. Generally, the Peer Counselor is available to [provide one to one and group counseling for people interested in improving their independent living situation, address issues related to their disability, and to work on issues related to relationships and stress. The DIRECT Peer Counselor is a certified professional counselor with a disability who will share life experience with other individuals. Through both group and individual counseling people learn the resources to address issues related to self esteem, decision making, coping and adjusting to disability. Participants set goals and actively pursue steps to achieve those goals. Peer counseling takes place individually or in a group setting.
How Do I get started?
Call and ask for the counselor. An intake appointment will be set up. The counselor will interview the individual to become more familiar with the persons view of themselves and their disabilities. The participant and the counselor will set individual goals to achieve. Feel free to bring any information or medical documentation you with to share. Intake usually lasts 2 hours.
Is there a cost?
DIRECT is able to offer six of hour-long counseling sessions for free. If more than six sessions are needed there is a $32.00 fee per session. If the consumer can show financial need, a sliding fee scale will be used.
If a consumer wishes to become involved with a group, there is no fee for our services.
